Personal Accountability II – 12.09.2019

How are ya?

Today’s blog is bought to you by the amount of comments that I got from my original “Personal Accountability – 08.26.2019″ blog post. I had a whopping 119 comments!!

Proof is below, I think I’m very proud of you all for inquiry on this underrated topic.

I wanted to return to this because you want to hear more about believing in yourself and how that relates to your goals, correct?

Not only that but you want to get better with what you feel passionately about.

NOT only that, you want to achieve your the highest success and be recognized that you do a fairly good job, if not, the only one to do an excellent job in your niche – at what others think is soo difficult to do.

Well first, I would love to continue the sequence of the original post. It asks us toward the end of it, “4 Words: Which one best describes…. you?” And then “What are you known for?”

  2. Good
  3. Mediocre
  4. Lousy

Fail fast and start over!

If you are currently reading this, I’m 99.9% sure you are known for your ability to achieve in an outstanding nature. Whether that be volunteering at a charity, committing to the gym or giving yourself more down time. To you, it is crucial that you do an outstanding job, otherwise what it the point of throwing in your time and effort?

I feel you on that!

It is exactly how I stay on top of my goals. Let’s be honest, I do get the once in a blue moon days where I stay at home and binge watch Youtube. But for the most part I was never into half assing anything that had my name on it.

This doesn’t mean that I am trial and error proof. I set up projects and tend to add more food than I can chew. And then of course I realize my choice of timing was not fair to me.

Greatness is in your blood

You are destined for greatness and I truly believe that. You can achieve anything you imagine which is the greatest gift of life. I do whatever it takes. Meaning if I have to connect with a thousand people in a room as an introvert, I will do it. If I have to give up girls night, won’t sweat it. If I have to give up a full 8 hour sleep and grab 4 hours, so be it.

DANGER OF THE FINISH LINE

As I’ve mentioned many times before, I’m hard at work on a book about how we make and break habits. This masterpiece will hit the shelves in 2015.

One thing that took me a long time to realize, in the study of habits: the danger of finish lines. Setting a finish line does indeed help people reach a goal, but although it’s widely assumed to help habit-formation, the reward of hitting a specific goal actually canundermine habits. A finish line marks a stopping point, and once we stop, we must start over, andstarting over is harder than starting.

The more dramatic the goal, the more decisive the end—and the more effort required to start over. By providing a specific goal, a temporary motivation, and requiring a new “start” once reached, hitting a milestone may interfere with habit-formation. Also, once we decide that we’ve achieved success, we tend to stop moving forward. Even an intermediate finish line can interfere with good habits.  In a letter, novelist Kurt Vonnegut advised his son Mark:

“I have seen a lot of writers stop writing or at least slow down after getting an advance. They have a feeling of completion after making a deal. That’s bad news creatively…I advise you to carry on without an advance, without that false feeling of completion.”

Have you ever found that hitting a finish line meant that you stopped do something, even though you’d been doing it successfully to that point? That you thought you’d been forging a habit, but it turned out not to be?

You are much more…

I find that many people have a frame of reference which dictates how capable they believe they are at a particular task, skill, or thing — and in-turn plays a role in what they attempt, which as you can imagine has an effect on what they end up achieving — be it personally or professionally.

You Are Far More Capable Than Any Shortcoming From Your Past…

Your frame of reference is often shaped by your past accomplishments, as well as those times where you’ve fallen short of your intended outcome. For example, in my own life I would definitely NOT be described as a math whiz.

In fact it’s fair to say that I was not very good at math at all in school. To this day I can tell you that my frame of reference (which was created in large part based on my past experiences) left me with the belief that I am not good at math which still sticks with me to this day. I don’t let it hold me back, but it does pop up in my mind from time to time.

If I’m really honest with myself, I have to confess that the reality is, for all I know, I might actually be good at math, if I were willing to put in extra time in study, or learn via different learning techniques. With all that said, my past experiences formed my frame of reference. The point here isn’t whether or not I could change this line of thinking. Perhaps you too have had past experiences which have shaped your frame of reference (both positively and negatively).

Whatever may have happened in your past, if it doesn’t serve to make you the person you want to be, you have in you the ability, through action and effort, the opportunity to change it to one that will serve you for the better.

Your frame of reference is important for several reasons — not the least of which is that it determines what you are willing to attempt in the first place, which of course is the starting point of everything with regards to the success process. If you don’t get started you can’t ever hope to succeed at any worthwhile endeavor. No amount of wishing alone will get you there.

Break Through Your Limiting Beliefs…

I love the story of Roger Bannister. The first man to ever run a  sub-four-minute mile. For years, many amazing athletes before him tried to break the elusive 4 minute time, but fell short. Interestingly, once he broke the record, before long, other athletes began doing the same, as well as breaking his time record.

What had kept all the athletes before Roger from breaking the 4-minute mile? Their own frame of reference that was built around the idea that”it couldn’t be done.” It took Roger to come along, and by overcoming the barrier, “re-frame” the way everyone saw the 4-minute mile, from one that couldn’t be broken, back to one that, like all goals, could be worked at, trained for, and eventually attained.

Friend, commit right here and now to go beyond those who stop just short of wishing for bigger and better results, and those who wake up everyday and set out about doing the daily work necessary to get where they want to go in life.

Why are goals important? 

On the best sunny day, the most powerful magnifying glass will not light paper if you keep moving the glass. But if you focus and hold it, the paper will light up. That is the power of concentration.

A man was traveling and stopped at an intersection. He asked an elderly man, “Where does this road take me?” The elderly person asked, “Where do you want to go?” The man replied, “I don’t know.” The elderly person said, “Then take any road. What difference does it make?”

How true. When we don’t know where we are going, any road will take us there.

Suppose you have all the football eleven players, enthusiastically ready to play the game, all charged up, and then someone took the goal post away. What would happen to the game? There is nothing left. How do you keep score? How do you know you have arrived?

Enthusiasm without direction is like wildfire and leads to frustration. Goals give a sense of direction. Would you sit in a train or a plane without knowing where it was going? The obvious answer is no. Then why do people go through life without having any goals?

What are the reasons you have goals? Have you added priority levels to them?

9 Free Ways to Become Wealthy

The real measure of your wealth is your ability to become the energy of it.

Start building real wealth today by doing the following:

  1. Realize that the small things are really the big things. – We are always looking for something better that we sometimes fail to realize that we already have the best we could hope for. When you get something small, you want more. When you get more, you desire even more. But when you lose everything, you realize the small things were really the big things.

  2. Cherish your relationships. – Sometimes people are beautiful, not in looks, not in what they say, just in who they are and what they do. Remember, you will never fully appreciate all of the things someone does for you until you find yourself doing the same things for yourself.   3. Be okay with the fact that you can’t control everything. – When you’re younger, you exhaust yourself trying to take charge of everything in your life, other people, and all situations. When you’re wearing yourself ragged trying to juggle the outcome of everything happening around you, it’s time to stop, take a breath, and remind yourself that the only things you can truly control, are what choices you will make, and how much control you will give to the fear that you’re feeling.

  4. Work through your failures. – Success is not a skill; it is a persistent attitude. The difference in winning and losing is, most often, the simple act of not quitting. Before you quit, think of the reason why you held on so long, and all the progress you have made.   5. Don’t let your fears make your decisions anymore. – Have faith that the universe has a plan for you, and it’s all being revealed in the right timeframe. Something you will eventually learn through all your ups and downs is that there are really no wrong decisions in life, just choices that will take your life down a totally different path. So take chances, follow your intuition, and allow yourself more moments of awe, wonder, inspiration and grace.

  6. Stand up for yourself. – Don’t let the people who do so little for you, control so much of your feelings and emotions. Never cry for those who don’t know the value of your tears. Stand your ground. It is better to let them walk away from you than all over you.

  7. Make up your mind to be happy. – Nobody can take away your pain, so don’t let anyone take away your happiness. If you want to be sad, no one in the world can make you happy. But if you make up your mind to be happy,  no one and nothing on earth can take that happiness from you.

  8. Let go of resentment. – You will only begin to heal and grow when you let go of the past, forgive those who have wronged you, and learn for forgive yourself for your mistakes. So every morning as you make your bed, think positively, and smooth out the wrinkles of negativity left from yesterday’s challenges, tuck the corners of your doubts away, and fluff your belief that every day is a perfect new beginning.

  9. Focus on the positive. – With everything that has happened to you, you can either feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift. Everything is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose. No matter how far you have traveled or how many failures you have encountered, hope and positivity can still meet you anywhere.

Tuesday Food for Thought – 07.09.2019

Can you remove negative thoughts??

My take on how this photo is quite interesting. I still think negative thoughts and find it nearly impossible to put negative thinking to a permanent stop. I have tried this exercise and it is a great negative thought manager.

Many of us believe that we are bad people because we think negative thoughts. If we begin to think of thoughts as an energy form, we can decide first how we would like to direct that energy. Everyone thinks negative thoughts. Some in a higher capacities than others because of their core values and self belief. Humans have the ability to use free will, meaning whatever you put your mind to will grow. If we think about failing a test while studying, chances are we may not get a passing mark. But if you decide that you are going to minimize your fears of failing – heck, you are not even going to feel horrible if you do not pass because perhaps you were thinking of an alternative career path anyway.

Be the creator of your experiences. Allow yourself to think and assess your thinking. Often times I catch myself, when I am caught in a negative thought loop, I pause and tell myself how amazing I am. Does not necessarily mean my negative thoughts have gone away. It just means that I chose to focus on a more inspirational thought. Try it!

How Are You? – 07.04.2019

How is your week so far?

This read is designed to make sure that if you are in the mist of building something, that you stay on your path. Before you fall off this weekend whether it be clubbing, a dinner or family function, create a to-do list of what you expect of yourself in those environments.

Studies have shown that once you write down a task with an action, you are 40% more likely to complete that action rather than you keeping the task in your head.

Lastly, remind yourself of your reason. You are surely less likely to tarnish all that you have built if you remind yourself of the investment you put in over the last 2 years or 3 days. Stay focused.

Are You a Leader? – 07.02.2019

Are You A Leader Who Enables or Empowers?

I believe the most important leadership role anyone has in this life is that of a parent.

As a parent your ultimate goal is to raise productive, self-sufficient adults, who go on to achieve and contribute more to the world than you do.

If you think about it, shouldn’t that be the goal of every business leader as well?

Ralph Nader said, “The function of leaders is to produce other leaders not just other followers.” And that is the essence of a true leader – is one who not only inspires followers but empowers them to go on to be great leaders.

So how do we do that? Well, let’s think about it from a parents perspective and there are three simple strategies that we think move us away from enabling and into the empowerment process.

#1. Allow For Collaboration in Decision Making 
As a parent you need to let your kids be part of making decisions so that they learn through experience the process as well as the positive and negative consequences of decisions. In the business world, our people need to be able to collaborate and participate in the decision making process, giving them a voice as well as the big picture mindset of all of the parameters to consider.

#2. Give Them Opportunities To Lead
If we want our children to be leaders then we need to let them lead. That sounds simple and equally as applicable in the business world, yet it is hard to loosen the rains. Micromanaging and overseeing every project, initiative, etc… not only burdens you as the leader but it stifles the growth of your people. Let them lead and move into the role of mentor. (Someone who can analyze what worked, what didn’t and where they can improve)

#3. Challenge Them
Leadership requires growth and the best way to stimulate growth is to challenge them. It is in the struggle that the stretching, learning and developing occurs. I am grateful for my parents for pushing me and I am grateful for business leaders who expected greatness from me and gave me the challenge to step up.

Leaders can learn a lot from great parents. I know without a doubt that the goal of every parent should be the goal of every leader – To Create More Leaders.
